Chinshan Outdoor Dry Storage Project

Date:2025-04-10

The Chinshan Outdoor Dry Storage project is the first of its kind in Taiwan to transfer spent fuels from spent fuel pools to an outdoor dry storage facility. On October 15th 2024, Taipower with PECL’s assistance finally obtained the certificate of completion for the water and soil conservation facilities for this project from the New Taipei City Government. This was followed by the commencement of a hot test on October 22.
During the test, the two casks with loaded spent fuels have been successfully placed on site - the first cask was transported and stored in November; while the second cask was completed in December. Subsequently, PECL will assist Taipower in applying for the operation license from the Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC).
Once NSC issues the operation license, spent fuels stored in the reactors of Chinshan Power Plant’s Unit 1 & 2 can be gradually moved to the dry storage facility, paving the way for future decommissioning operations to ensure its safety and timely progress.
