Cleaning up Taiwan's coal-fired power
Taiwan hasn't foregone coal entirely and has actually added significant new coal fired power capacity in recent years, such as the three 800MW ultra-supercritical units added at Linkou Power Plant in northern Taiwan. Operating at 600°Celsius, ultra-supercritical coal-fired boilers are 18% more efficient than conventional subcritical boilers and reduce NOX/SOX, PM2.5, and CO2 emissions by 15%.
PECL provided the BOP (Balance of Plant) structures including a 345kV switch yard, seawater FGD (flue gas desulfurization) process, and the power plant's coal silos. The first unit came online in 2016, and the last in 2019, and have been successfully operating at high capacity ever since.
