Worsley Alumina Refinery Expansion Project

Bechtel recruits PECL to expand aluminum production in Western Australia



In 2008, Bechtel became the EPCM for the expansion of the Worsley Alumina Refinery from 3.5 Mtpa to 4.6 Mtpa. Located west of Collie in Western Australia. Worsley Alumina is a consortium comprised of BHP Billiton, Japan Alumina Associates (Australia) and Sojitz Alumina. The project scope included the installation of a 5th milling circuit; an additional 20 precipitation tanks; a sixth calciner; a fifth deep cone washer; conveyor system to the train loading facility; and an additional rail loading silo.

A new multi-fuel cogeneration power plant was built at the refinery as part of the expansion, and the steam it produces is vital to the refining process.

PECL supported Bechtel by providing detailed design and engineering services for Mechanical/System, Civil and Structural, Electrical, Control systems and Plant design & Piping.
