PECL Chairman Speech at NTU: Leadership & Cross-Cultural Communication

Date:2024-05-02

On 6 March 2024, Wayne Chin, PECL Chairman, was a guest speaker at the NTU Interdisciplinary Forum sponsored by the: CM group of civil engineering, institute of industrial engineering, department of economics and national institute of development.

Wayne was invited by the NTU head of the management division of Civil Engineering Dept, Professor Huo-Ping Tseng. The speech covered two vital aspects of our interconnected world: Leadership and Cross-Cultural Communication.

Wayne discussed the role of good “Leadership” in a company’s success. He spoke about leadership and management and how both are important but play different roles within an organization. In today’s highly interconnected world, leadership takes on an added dimension and the ability to understand, appreciate, and leverage cultural differences is essential for success.

Cross-cultural communication lies at the heart of this endeavor and involves not just speaking different languages, but also understanding the nuances of behavior, customs and social norms across many cultures. Wayne cited a few international Bechtel projects, some which PECL supported, where cross-cultural awareness supported successful project execution.

Wayne closed by stressing effective cross-cultural leadership requires a commitment to inclusivity and that Leaders must create an environment where all voices are valued and heard, and where diversity of ideas are embraced.
